A memorial for Frances Rhodes.

Early Life

I was born Frances Greetham on 5th April 1937, daughter of John Frederick William (Fred) Greetham and Frances Sophia Speight.

I was the youngest of the family with an elder brother Kenneth, and four sisters Audrey, Doris, and the twins Joan and Shirley

As a child I was known by my family as Frankie, with the nickname Bubbles although I was called My Little Lamb by my Grandfather.

I lived at 5 Wharton Street for the whole of my childhood until I got married, went to Macaulay Street School, Grimsby and later Armstrong Street Girls School.

Although the first 8 years of my life the country was at war I never really felt scared. We did not have much money but I had a happy childhood, and I enjoyed the simplest things like my toy Rastas made my Mrs Deakins who made most of our toys and dresses when we were children.

As a child I enjoyed going to Brownies and later the Girl Guides with St Hugh's 19th Guides. I was also selected to be the Rose Queen in 1950 alongside my best friend Pam, with whom I was inseparable at the time.

I was also a member at St Hugh's Church Youth Fellowship, and enjoyed outings with my friends to places like Scarborough in 1953 and Skegness in 1954.

My first job was at Burgons a local store at 49 Kent Street, Grimsby, grocers that only closed in 1980. Later my mother told me about a job working at the corner shop close to home to be on the meat counter as the meat slicer although I never really enjoyed slicing meat.
